Try these tips to make it sensory-friendly

Are you looking for fresh ideas to make your desk space more productive and appealing? Well, look no further… how about making it sensory-friendly? Most of us wouldn’t put this at the top of our list of must-haves and have ignored our senses when setting up our workstations or workspace.

There are eight senses to pay attention to that can improve your workspace, increase your love of it and improve your productivity while working.

Sight

Boost your workspace - sight

A minimalist desk set-up helps many people at work. Ask yourself this question about every item on your desk. “Have I used this today?” If not, remove it from your desk. Clutter in your eye line can be a distraction. Love your workspace by only keeping the things handy that you use.

Taste

You might think this is the most obscure sense! But do you have access to food and drink in your workspace? Water should always be at hand to keep you hydrated and having healthy snacking habits can help you to focus and be more productive.

Smell

What is the air quality like in your workspace? smell-free or stale? Clean, fresh, well-ventilated air is important. Productivity while working can be negatively impacted by distracting scents and odours. This can be resolved by opening a window or using an air purifier.

Balance

Balance relies on muscles and whole-body coordination, stand and move around at every opportunity you get. Put the printer at the other end of the room so that you have to get up and walk to pick up what you’ve printed. Try moving your head, neck and shoulders around when sitting at your computer as it all helps with maintaining good balance.

Sound

Noise in the workplace can be a real distraction, especially in a shared environment where there is a lot of telephone activity. A good workspace is one where noise levels are not too distracting. Simple remedies for this are to use acoustic desk screens and wear a noise-cancelling headset for your calls, or headphones to block out background sounds.

Touch

A big part of productive workspace design is being comfortable at your workstation. First and foremost, is the chair you sit on suitable? Sitting with the chair and its armrests at the right height for your desk, and the position of the back of the chair are all very important for your posture. Your body touches your desk furniture throughout the day and therefore, it needs to be tailored to your body requirements.

Movement

A productive desk layout is key to a healthy mindset. Adopting awkward postures at your desk puts a great deal of strain on your body. Poor workspace ergonomics can put additional strain on your back, neck, arms, legs and eyes.

Introception

And the last of your eight senses is the lesser-known, introception. This is an internal body sense that is always hard at work. It tells you when you are thirsty, hungry, tired or need a bathroom break. Being well-hydrated is a huge bonus to your health and work, so listen to your introception senses as they will tell you what your body needs.
