What is National Tea Day in the UK?

In workplaces across the UK, the tea round is a ritual. It's the unspoken love language of the workplace: the quick chat in the kitchen, the "milk & sugar?" question, and the well-earned five-minute pause in a busy day. What's your favourite flavour?

It’s National Tea Day – the perfect excuse to put the kettle on (again) and raise a cup to Britain’s favourite brew!

Whether you're team English Breakfast, Earl Grey, a green, matcha tea, or you like a fruity tea with a zesty herbal blend, there’s no denying it: it’s a workplace essential, right up there with biscuits.

So... what is National Tea Day?

April 21st was picked for National Tea Day to honour Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday — a fitting tribute, considering Britain’s deep-rooted love of tea. The nation’s tea obsession began back in the 17th century when Catherine of Braganza, wife of King Charles II, brought the tradition to the royal court. Fast forward to the 1840s, and afternoon tea became a fashionable ritual thanks to Anna Russell, the Duchess of Bedford.

The official slogan for National Tea Day is “Brew More. Do More.”

Different types of tea

A British brew with global roots

Tea may be a staple in British culture, but it’s consumed worldwide. From Japan’s matcha ceremonies to India’s famous chai, each corner of the world has its tea traditions.

Let’s not forget the quintessential British tradition of Afternoon Tea, originally introduced in the 1840s to keep the hunger at bay before dinner. These days, it’s an occasional treat featuring tea, sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, and other delicious food.

The office tea culture: steeped in routine

In workplaces across the UK, the tea round is a time-honoured ritual. It's the unspoken love language of the workplace: the quick chat in the kitchen, the "milk & sugar?" question, and the well-earned five-minute pause in a busy day.
